In honor of Sleep Awareness Week, we decided to dig through our data to see if we could find any interesting trends in sleep patterns among Motiv Ring users. Because the Motiv App tracks metrics like sleep duration, sleep restlessness, and resting heart rate, we were able to find some interesting tidbits on the sleep habits of our users.

Early to Bed, Early to Rise

Because Motiv Ring automatically detects when users fall asleep at night and when they wake up, we were able to find some interesting information on when users were hitting the sack every night and when they were crawling out of bed.

While New York has been nicknamed ‘The City That Never Sleeps,’ it looks like they are getting just as much sleep as us folks out West. The impressive finding was that, while people on the West Coast might be seen as more relaxed than the rest of the country, they are actually rising out of bed much earlier every day.

The early wake up times did not, however, mean that Motiv Ring users on the West Coast were getting significantly less sleep than their counterparts back East. As it turns out, users on the West Coast were turning in much earlier, recording on average a similar duration to East Coast users.

If you’re looking for ways to get better sleep – from falling asleep more quickly to sleeping through the night – there are some simple steps that you can take. Sleeping in a cooler room has been shown to help your body know that it’s time for bed. Studies also show that you might want to start removing all digital devices from your bedroom, as their artificial blue light prevents you from falling asleep. Lastly, it might be time for a new mattress, as studies have found it can significantly reduce your stress.

Sleep Duration

On average, Motiv Ring users are getting about seven hours of sleep every night. That puts them right in the sweet spot for recommended duration for healthy sleep. This is great news to us, as getting less than the recommended daily amount can lead to all kinds of health problems, including depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, and even obesity and diabetes.

We did notice, however, that users in some states seemed to be getting less sleep than others. North Dakota was only clocking 6.4 hours on average every night. Considering that when we studied the sex data of our users, we found a study by adult toy manufacturer Adam and Eve that ranked North Dakota in the top 10 states for sex toy purchases per capita, maybe there’s a specific reason North Dakotans are ‘burning the midnight oil.’

Our Weekends Aren’t As Restful As You’d Think

When analyzing Motiv Ring user data on resting heart rate (RHR), we also found some interesting patterns. RHRs were typically higher while users slept on Friday and Saturday nights and remained higher than average on Sunday nights. That may seem perplexing at first, as you would think users would be more relaxed on the weekends, but looking at some of the contributing factors to increases in RHR, the picture gets a little clearer.

The spikes in resting heart rate while users slept on Friday and Saturday night could very well be the result of a big night out. Alcohol works as a vasodilator, increasing both heart rate and blood flow. The escalation in heart rate on Fridays and Saturdays could very well be the result of our users tipping back a few over the weekend.

On the flip side, we were puzzled by an additional increase in RHR while users slept on Sunday nights. What first looked like a Sunday Funday continuation of weekend celebrations might actually be the result of what is often called the ‘Sunday Scaries.’ As it turns out, 73% of the United States reports feeling the Sunday Blues.

Luckily, there are some things you can do to be rested for the start of the work week, like making a to-do list to organize your thoughts, practicing a little mindfulness, or even listening to a relaxing podcast.

Overall, we are happy to see that Motiv Ring users are generally getting a healthy amount of sleep every night and hope they can find some ways to cope with nights that . We hope that the health data Motiv Ring provides is enabling them to keep living better.
